Gene Environment Interactions in Solvent Exposed Workers and Liver Enzymes for Worker Biomonitoring

The hepatotoxic potential of occupational solvent exposure is a critical concern in industrial hygiene and occupational medicine. While the adverse effects of individual solvents on hepatic function are well documented, the variability in individual susceptibility remains a complex challenge. This paper presents a comprehensive academic investigation into the gene-environment interactions characterizing the relationship between occupational solvent exposure and alterations in liver enzyme profiles. The study synthesizes current epidemiological data and genetic screening methodologies to elucidate how specific genetic polymorphisms, particularly those governing xenobiotic metabolism such as Cytochrome P450 and Glutathione S-transferase families, modulate the hepatotoxic effects of industrial solvents like toluene, xylene, and trichloroethylene. By analyzing comprehensive occupational cohorts, the research highlights that workers possessing specific variant alleles exhibit significantly elevated liver enzymes, including alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, when exposed to high concentrations of volatile organic compounds compared to their wild-type counterparts. The analysis emphasizes the necessity of moving beyond rudimentary exposure assessments toward integrated, personalized occupational risk evaluations that account for inherent genetic susceptibilities. The findings provide a robust foundation for revising occupational safety thresholds and establishing targeted biomonitoring protocols to mitigate solvent-induced occupational liver disease.
